Samhain 2026: a tarot spread for the thin veil
On this page
Samhain is the old Gaelic festival that marks the end of the harvest and the turn toward the dark half of the year, kept from the evening of October 31 into November 1. In 2026 it lands on a Saturday, and on the same night Mercury and Venus are both retrograde. Many people use it to remember the dead and to let go of what the year is finished with. Below: what the festival is, how it fits with the tarot, and a five-card spread to sit with it.
What is Samhain?
Samhain (said roughly "SOW-in") is one of the four great seasonal festivals of the Gaelic calendar, halfway between the autumn equinox and the winter solstice. The harvest was in, the animals were brought down from the hills, and the year was understood to turn from light to dark. Old Irish and Scottish traditions say that on this night the boundary between this world and the other grew thin, and that the dead could walk close to the living.
Halloween grew out of the same date. The Christian feast of All Saints was set on November 1, so the night before became "All Hallows' Eve", and customs from both traditions mixed. Today, some people keep Samhain as a religious or spiritual night, some keep Halloween as a party, and many keep a little of both.
Why it fits the tarot
You don't need to believe in any veil to find the night useful. It asks a plain question: what is over, and what do I take with me? That is also what the tarot is good at, because it gives you a picture to think with.
Three things make 2026 a good year for it:
- Mercury retrograde runs from October 24 to November 13. Astrologers read it as time for reviewing, rereading and revisiting, which suits remembering.
- Venus is retrograde too, until November 13, so questions about love, values and old attachments are close to the surface.
- A new moon in Scorpio arrives on November 9, the dark of the moon in the sign most associated with endings and what is hidden. (The Hunter's Moon, a full moon in Taurus, comes on October 26.)
Cards that tend to belong here
A few cards carry the mood of the night well. If one of them shows up in your spread, read it with the season in mind:
- Death: an ending that makes room, rather than a loss. Scorpio's card, and the one most people want on Samhain.
- The Moon: what is half-seen, dreams, fear that has not been named yet.
- Six of Cups: childhood, family, memories, the past as a gift you can hold.
- Judgement: a call to take stock, to forgive, to answer what your life is asking of you now.
- The Hermit: the lantern for the dark half of the year; a time to go inward on purpose.
A five-card Samhain spread
Shuffle while you think about the year, cut, and lay five cards in a row, left to right. Light a candle if you like. Read them slowly.
- What is ending? The thing the year is finished with, named plainly.
- What did I inherit? From family, from the past, from the people before you. It can be a gift or a weight.
- What is hidden in the dark? What you have not looked at yet, or have been afraid to.
- What am I ready to let rest? What you can set down this winter without regret.
- What do I carry into the winter? The one thing worth keeping close until spring.
Read cards one and four together: the first names the ending, the fourth says whether you are ready for it. Card five is the one to write down.
A small note on respect: Samhain, Halloween and the Day of the Dead (October 31 to November 2 in Mexico) are different traditions with their own meaning. Borrow the idea of remembering, not the costume.
Frequently asked questions
When is Samhain in 2026?
From sunset on October 31 into November 1, 2026. Some traditions keep it on the astronomical midpoint between the equinox and the solstice instead, which falls a few days later, so check the custom you follow.
Is Samhain the same as Halloween?
They share a date and a history, but they are not the same. Samhain is the older Gaelic festival; Halloween is the later, mostly secular celebration that took parts of it. Many people mark both.
Can I read tarot on Halloween?
Yes. Nothing about the date changes how the cards work. It is simply a good night for reflective questions: endings, memory, what you carry.
Which tarot card is Samhain?
Death is the card most often linked to it, along with The Moon and The Hermit. There is no official card, only the ones whose meaning fits the night.
Does Mercury retrograde change a reading?
Not the cards. It changes the mood: a time to slow down and review. If a spread feels muddled these weeks, wait a day and read it again.
