Symbolism
The Hermit stands alone on a snowy mountaintop, wrapped in a gray cloak. In his right hand he raises a lantern with a six-pointed star inside; with his left he leans on a staff. His eyes are lowered, watching the path. In the 1909 art, he has climbed far away from everything to see more clearly, and the light he carries only shows the next step.
In general
The Hermit is the card of soul-searching. It shows up when it's time to step away from the noise, reflect, and look for answers inside yourself rather than in other people's opinions. It's about chosen solitude, study, maturity and a guide who lights the way without hurrying. This isn't sad isolation: it's the retreat of someone who needs to hear themselves think. Reversed, it points to loneliness that weighs on you, avoiding reflection or, the opposite, withdrawing so far that you shut everything out.
Yes or no
The Hermit raises his lantern and looks within: maybe. The answer asks for a time of quiet before you take any step. Reversed, the answer is no, not now: running from reflection, or shutting yourself away, only delays clarity.
In love
In a love reading, The Hermit points to a time of retreat: someone who needs space, a pause to figure out what you really want, or a love that matures slowly.
If you're in a relationship, it asks you to respect each other's space and have deeper, quieter conversations. If you're single, The Hermit suggests this is a time to get to know yourself before looking for someone else.
Reversed, it points to loneliness, emotional distance, or someone who shuts down and won't let anyone in.
As feelings
As feelings, The Hermit means something sincere but reserved: this person is thinking about you and about what they feel, but needs time and quiet to understand it. Reversed, it shows someone lost in their own head, pulling away instead of talking.
At work
At work, The Hermit often points to study, specialization, independent work or a period of rethinking your career. It can also be a mentor, someone more experienced who offers guidance. Reversed, it warns against cutting yourself off from your team, or against work that has lost its sense of purpose.
With money
With money, The Hermit calls for caution and simplicity: spend less, think before you decide, and review what really matters. Reversed, it shows decisions you've been putting off out of fatigue or confusion.
In family and friendship
In family and friendship, The Hermit brings the need for space of your own, or the wise person everyone goes to for advice. Reversed, it can point to someone withdrawing without explanation, or feeling lonely even when you're surrounded by people.
On the personal path
On a personal level, The Hermit asks for time that's just yours: take walks, journal, meditate, get away from screens and other people's voices. The answer you're looking for shows up in the quiet. Reversed, it shows a fear of being alone with yourself, or a retreat that has gone on too long.
Advice
As advice, The Hermit says: step back a little to see more clearly. Your light only needs to show the next step.
