The Moon, card XVIII of the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot (1909)

XVIII · Folio 19

Major Arcana · XVIII

The Moon

Upright

intuition, illusion, the unconscious

Not everything is as it seems. Follow your intuition carefully along the misty path.

Reversed

clarity, fears exposed, confusion lifting

The fog begins to lift. Fears lose their grip once seen in daylight.

Symbolism

The Moon shows a full moon with a face in profile, hanging between two towers above a path that rises out of the water and disappears into the mountains. A dog and a wolf howl up at it, and a crayfish crawls out of the pool onto the bank. Drops fall from the sky like dew. In the 1909 art, the path is there, but you can only half see it: the moonlight shows the way and plays tricks on you at the same time.

In general

The Moon is the card of things that aren't clear yet. It shows up when there's doubt, fear or something hidden, and when your intuition is speaking louder than logic. It calls for caution: not everything is what it seems, and this isn't the time for final decisions. It's also a card of dreams, the unconscious and imagination. Reversed, The Moon shows the fog starting to lift: a truth coming out, a fear losing its grip, or a confusion that still has a hold on you.

Yes or no

The Moon lights only half the path: maybe. Not everything is what it seems; wait for the fog to lift before you decide. Reversed, the answer is no, for now: something is still hidden and needs to come to light.

In love

In a love reading, The Moon points to uncertainty: mixed feelings, insecurity, or something left unsaid. You may be idealizing someone, seeing them as you wish they were.

If you're in a relationship, it calls for honest conversations, and for a close look at your own fears, which may be distorting what you see. If you're single, The Moon warns you to watch out for illusions, and for people who aren't showing you who they really are.

Reversed, The Moon shows the truth coming out: a misunderstanding cleared up, or a secret revealed.

As feelings

As feelings, The Moon means this person is confused about how they feel, or isn't showing you everything. There may be attraction and fear mixed together, or a feeling they don't fully understand themselves. Reversed, their feelings are starting to become clearer, or a truth is about to be spoken.

At work

At work, The Moon often points to murky situations: missing information, hidden agendas, a project that isn't what it seems. It asks you to verify before you trust. Reversed, it shows things starting to become clear.

With money

With money, The Moon warns you about promises that sound too good to be true, contracts with fine print and decisions made in the dark. Reversed, it shows money confusion starting to resolve, as long as you take a hard look at the numbers.

In family and friendship

In family and friendship, The Moon points to misunderstandings, secrets or mistrust. Sometimes the problem has more to do with fear than with facts. Reversed, it shows a confusing situation finally clearing up.

On the personal path

On a personal level, The Moon asks you to listen to your intuition and look at your fears, without letting them make your decisions. It's a good time to dream, journal and observe, not to act on impulse. Reversed, it shows anxiety easing and clarity coming back.

Advice

As advice, The Moon says: wait for the fog to lift. Trust your intuition, but check the facts before you decide.
