Tarophia Tarot & Self-Discovery
Seven of Cups, a card of the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot (1909)

Folio 43

Suit of Cups

Seven of Cups

Upright

illusions, choices, fantasy

Many options, not all of them real. Separate desire from fantasy before choosing.

Reversed

clarity, decision, focus

Illusions fade and the right choice becomes clear.

Symbolism

The Seven of Cups shows a figure seen from behind, in silhouette, facing seven cups floating among clouds. Each one holds something different: a head, a glowing veiled figure, a snake, a castle, jewels, a laurel wreath and a dragon. In the 1909 art, dreams and temptations are all mixed together: not everything that shines is real, and not everything that frightens is dangerous.

In general

The Seven of Cups is the card of illusions. It shows up when there are too many options, fantasies or desires at once, and it's hard to tell what's real. It's about imagination, daydreams, confusing choices and the risk of getting lost in wishful thinking. It can also bring creativity and possibility. Reversed, it shows clarity coming back: illusions falling away, more realistic choices and focus finally showing up.

Yes or no

The Seven of Cups offers cups full of dreams: maybe. It depends on choosing just one and seeing whether it's real. Reversed, the answer is no, not the way you imagined: now you can see what was fantasy.

In love

In a love reading, the Seven of Cups points to fantasy and indecision: idealizing someone, having more than one person in mind, or not knowing what you want.

If you're in a relationship, it asks you to watch out for unrealistic expectations. If you're single, it shows plenty of options, but asks you to choose wisely.

Reversed, it points to getting real, seeing someone for who they are, or finally making up your mind.

As feelings

As feelings, the Seven of Cups means attraction mixed with fantasy: this person may be idealizing you, or may be confused about what they feel. Reversed, the feelings are becoming clearer.

At work

At work, the Seven of Cups often points to lots of ideas and options but little focus. It also favors creative work. Reversed, it's time to choose and execute.

With money

With money, the Seven of Cups warns against offers that seem too good to be true and decisions based on daydreams. Reversed, it shows more down-to-earth choices.

In family and friendship

In family and friendship, the Seven of Cups brings expectations that don't match reality. Reversed, it shows conversations that clear things up.

On the personal path

On a personal level, the Seven of Cups asks you to dream, but to choose: a dream only comes true once it leaves the clouds. Reversed, it shows you're already seeing more clearly.

Advice

As advice, the Seven of Cups says: pick one cup and find out what's really inside.
