Tarophia Tarot & Self-Discovery

How the cards are drawn at Tarophia (and why your cut matters)

At Tarophia, the deck and you decide which cards come up, not the AI. The deck is genuinely shuffled, you cut it and pick a pile, and the cards come from there, just like at a real tarot table. The crystal you choose doesn't change the cards: it changes the focus they're read with. The AI only steps in afterward, to interpret what's already on the table.

Is the deck really shuffled?

Yes. For every reading, all 78 cards of the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot are shuffled using cryptographic randomness, the same kind of chance used in digital security. No card is picked in advance, and no question "pulls" a particular card. Each card's orientation is decided as it's turned over: on average, about three in ten come up reversed, close to what happens with a well-mixed physical deck.

Why your cut matters

After the shuffle, you cut the deck into three piles of different sizes, the way a hand does at the table, and choose one. The pile you choose goes on top, and the ten cards of the Celtic Cross are dealt from it, in order.

That means your choice decides the spread. If you'd picked another pile, other cards would be on the table. It's the same principle as an in-person reading: the reader shuffles, but the querent cuts.

Choosing your crystal

Before the cut, three stones appear without names. They're drawn from twelve crystals, and you pick the one that draws you, without overthinking it. Only then does the oracle reveal which stone has chosen you. The stones stay nameless on purpose: that way your intuition does the choosing, not whatever your head already thinks about each crystal.

Does the crystal change the cards?

No. The crystal never changes which cards come up. It sets the focus of the reading: the same cards, read with a different emphasis. Think of two experienced readers at the same table: one pays more attention to courage, the other to calm.

For example, the same spread read with Carnelian tends to speak of desire, creativity and bold moves; read with Aquamarine, it speaks of letting your feelings flow, of calm and a gentler kind of courage. The cards are the same; what changes is what the oracle highlights.

The crystal also lights up the medallion on the back of your cards in the color of the stone you chose.

The twelve crystals and their focus

  • Amethyst (intuition): listens to what hasn't been said yet; the reading highlights inner knowing and dreams.
  • Rose Quartz (love): asks for tenderness, starting with yourself; highlights relationships, self-love and emotional healing.
  • Citrine (abundance): kindles the courage to act; highlights concrete next steps and prosperity.
  • Aventurine (opportunity): opens the way to fresh starts; highlights openings and new beginnings.
  • Lapis Lazuli (truth): asks for the truth, spoken clearly; highlights honest communication.
  • Obsidian (protection): shows you the shadow so you can walk through it; highlights boundaries and letting go.
  • Tiger's Eye (focus): steadies your focus and your footing; highlights willpower and practical judgment.
  • Selenite (serenity): brings the stillness and light to see further; highlights peace and a wider view.
  • Labradorite (magic): reveals what shifts beneath the surface; highlights change and hidden potential.
  • Carnelian (vitality): awakens desire and courage; highlights creativity and bold moves.
  • Aquamarine (flow): lets your feelings flow without drowning in them; highlights calm and gentle courage.
  • Black Tourmaline (grounding): grounds you and protects your path; highlights security and clearing what's heavy.

The question the oracle asks you back

A Tarophia reading isn't just draw-and-read. After the first act, the oracle asks you a question, and your answer guides what comes in the acts that follow. That way the reading follows your situation, not just the meanings of the cards.

What the AI does, and what it doesn't

The AI doesn't pick cards, doesn't know anything beyond what you've told it, and doesn't predict the future. It writes the interpretation from three things: the cards' traditional meanings and our library's notes, the Celtic Cross positions, and your question, with the crystal's focus. It's the role a tarot reader plays at the table: looking at what came up and telling you what it says about your question.

And in Yes or No?

In Yes or No, the cards are shuffled the same way and five appear face down. You choose one, and it answers. There's no crystal and no AI there: the answer comes from the card's tradition.

Frequently asked questions

Does the AI choose which cards come up?

No. The cards are shuffled at random and you choose the pile. The AI only interprets the cards already on the table.

Does the crystal make the reading more accurate?

No. The crystal doesn't change the cards or promise accuracy. It sets the reading's tone, like a focus: what to highlight among everything the cards are saying.

Can I redo the draw until I get what I want?

You can start a new reading whenever you like, but the cards that came up are part of the answer. A spread doesn't change once it's been drawn.

Why do the crystals appear without names?

So the choice comes from intuition. If you saw the names, you'd probably choose based on what you already think about each stone, not on what you feel in the moment.
