Symbolism
The Queen of Cups sits on a throne at the water's edge, decorated with little sea creatures. She holds and gazes at an ornate, closed cup with handles and angels on it, unlike any other cup in the suit. Shells and pebbles lie at her feet, and the water laps at the shore. In the 1909 art, the closed cup is her inner world: deep, protected and hers alone.
In general
The Queen of Cups is the card of empathy. It shows up when a situation calls for sensitivity, listening, intuition and care: being there for yourself and for others. It's about emotional maturity, compassion, creativity and finely tuned intuition. It can represent a nurturing person, or those qualities in you. Reversed, it shows too much emotion: soaking up other people's pain, getting lost in your feelings, neediness, or a hard time setting boundaries.
Yes or no
The Queen of Cups gazes at her closed cup: yes, if you listen to your intuition. Your heart already knows. Reversed, the answer is maybe: she's drowning in her feelings, so take care of yourself before taking care of others.
In love
In a love reading, the Queen of Cups points to a deep, caring, empathetic love: someone who listens, understands and makes you feel safe.
If you're in a relationship, it speaks of emotional intimacy and supporting each other. If you're single, it asks you to trust your gut about people.
Reversed, it points to emotional dependence, jealousy, or giving so much that you forget yourself.
As feelings
As feelings, the Queen of Cups means deep affection and care: this person feels a lot for you and genuinely worries about you. Reversed, the feelings are intense but unstable or needy.
At work
At work, the Queen of Cups often points to caring professions, therapy, teaching, art or customer-facing work, and to leading with empathy. Reversed, it warns against taking on everyone's problems.
With money
With money, the Queen of Cups asks you to listen to your intuition, but not to decide on emotion alone. Reversed, it shows spending to soothe your feelings.
In family and friendship
In family and friendship, the Queen of Cups is the one who welcomes and listens to everyone. Reversed, it shows the exhaustion of caring for others without being cared for.
On the personal path
On a personal level, the Queen of Cups asks you to trust what you feel and treat your own emotions with the same kindness you give others. Reversed, it invites you to set boundaries.
Advice
