Folio 68
Suit of Pentacles
Four of Pentacles
Upright
security, · control, · saving
Holding and protecting what you have built. Security matters.
Reversed
greed, · materialism, · fear of loss
Holding too tight stops the flow. What is hoarded out of fear becomes a cage.
Symbolism
The Four of Pentacles shows a crowned figure sitting down, hugging a pentacle tightly to their chest. Another pentacle rests on their head, and two more sit under their feet. A city stands behind them. In the 1909 art, everything is safe, but they're so busy holding on that they can't move.
In general
The Four of Pentacles is the card of security and control. It shows up when you need to protect what you've built: saving money, keeping things stable, setting boundaries. It's about prudence, but also about clinging, fear of loss, too much control and a hard time sharing. Reversed, it shows two ways out: loosening up and being more generous, or gripping even tighter until everything freezes.
Yes or no
The Four of Pentacles hugs its coins: maybe. Open your hand a little to let something new in. Reversed, the answer is no: holding on so hard stops all movement.
In love
In a love reading, the Four of Pentacles points to caution, possessiveness or a hard time opening up: guarding your heart so closely that no one can get in.
If you're in a relationship, it asks you to watch out for jealousy and control. If you're single, it shows a heart that's very well guarded.
Reversed, it points to letting go of control and trusting, or to clinging that becomes suffocating.
As feelings
As feelings, the Four of Pentacles means someone who likes you but is afraid of losing you, so they hold on too tightly. Reversed, it shows someone starting to open up.
At work
At work, the Four of Pentacles often points to stability, but also to a fear of change or risk. Reversed, it's time to invest, or to loosen your grip.
With money
With money, the Four of Pentacles points to saving, reserves and caution, sometimes too much of it. Reversed, it shows spending going up, or more generosity.
In family and friendship
In family and friendship, the Four of Pentacles brings someone who controls or won't share. Reversed, it shows more openness.
On the personal path
On a personal level, the Four of Pentacles asks you to take care of what you have without clinging to it: security isn't the same as control. Reversed, it invites you to trust more.
