The Moon, card XVIII of the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot (1909)

XVIII · Folio 19

Major Arcana · XVIII

The Moon

Upright

intuition, illusion, the unconscious

Not everything is as it seems. Follow your intuition carefully along the misty path.

Reversed

clarity, fears exposed, confusion lifting

The fog begins to lift. Fears lose their grip once seen in daylight.

Symbolism

The Moon shows a full moon with a face in profile, between two towers, above a path that rises from the water and disappears into the mountains. A dog and a wolf howl at it, and a crayfish climbs out of the pool onto the shore. Drops fall from the sky like dew. In the 1909 art, the path is there, but only half visible: moonlight lights the way and deceives at the same time.

In general

The Moon is the card of what is not yet clear. It appears when there is doubt, fear or hidden information, and when intuition speaks louder than logic. It asks for caution: not everything is what it seems, and this is not the time for final decisions. It also speaks of dreams, the unconscious and imagination. Reversed, The Moon shows the fog beginning to lift: a truth surfacing, a fear losing its hold, or a confusion that still holds you.

Yes or no

The Moon lights the path only halfway: maybe. Not everything is what it seems; wait for the fog to lift before deciding. Reversed, the answer is no, for now: something is still hidden and needs to come to light.

In love

In a love reading, The Moon points to uncertainty: confused feelings, insecurity, or something left unsaid. There may be idealisation, seeing the other as you wish they were.

If you are in a relationship, it asks for honest conversations and attention to your own fears, which may be distorting what you see. If you are single, The Moon asks for care with illusions and with people who do not show who they really are.

Reversed, in love, The Moon shows the truth surfacing: a misunderstanding cleared up, or a secret coming out.

As feelings

As feelings, The Moon shows that this person is confused about what they feel, or is not showing everything. There may be attraction and fear mixed together, or a feeling they themselves do not yet understand. Reversed, it shows feelings beginning to clear, or a truth about to be spoken.

At work

At work, The Moon often points to unclear situations: missing information, hidden intentions, a project that is not what it seems. It asks you to check before you trust. Reversed, it shows the situation starting to clear up.

With money

With money, The Moon asks for care with promises that sound too good, unclear contracts and decisions made in the dark. Reversed, it shows financial confusion beginning to resolve, as long as you look closely at the numbers.

In family and friendship

With family and friends, The Moon speaks of misunderstandings, secrets or mistrust. Sometimes the problem is more fear than fact. Reversed, it shows a confusing situation clearing up.

On the personal path

As personal guidance, The Moon asks you to listen to your intuition and look at your fears without letting them decide for you. It is a good time to dream, write and observe, not to act on impulse. Reversed, it shows anxiety easing and clarity returning.

Advice

The Moon's advice is to wait for the fog to lift: trust your intuition, but confirm the facts before you decide.
