The Lovers, card VI of the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot (1909)

VI · Folio 7

Major Arcana · VI

The Lovers

Upright

love, choice, aligned values

A choice of the heart, made wholeheartedly. True union begins with shared values.

Reversed

disharmony, indecision, conflicting values

Desire and values have drifted apart. A postponed decision is weighing on your bonds.

Symbolism

The Lovers shows a naked man and woman in a garden, under the sun and beneath the wings of an angel who blesses them. Behind the woman stands the tree of knowledge, with the serpent; behind the man, a tree of flames. The woman looks up to the angel, the man looks at her. In the 1909 art, love is bound to a choice: what unites the two is also what each one decides.

In general

The Lovers is the card of love and of choices that come from the heart. It speaks of union, true affinity and aligning what you feel with what you value. It often appears before an important decision, asking that it be made whole, not only with the head or only with desire. Reversed, it shows imbalance: a postponed choice, conflicting values or a relationship out of alignment.

Yes or no

The Lovers meet beneath the angel's wings: yes, when the choice comes from the heart and from your values at once. Reversed, the answer is maybe: before you answer, see whether what you want and what you value stand on the same side.

In love

In a love reading, The Lovers points to a strong, true connection: attraction, affinity and the feeling of having found someone who fits with you.

If you are in a relationship, the card speaks of a time of union and choice: deepening the commitment, deciding a next step together. If you are single, The Lovers announces a meaningful meeting, or asks for clarity about what you really want in love.

Reversed, in love, it shows a mismatch: different values, a choice between two people, or a relationship where one gives more than the other.

As feelings

As feelings, The Lovers shows true love and attraction: this person feels a strong connection with you, not only physical but of affinity, of choice. Reversed, it shows confused or divided feelings: the attraction is there, but so are doubt, fear or someone else in the way.

At work

At work, The Lovers often points to partnerships and choices: a business partnership, a team that works well, or a decision between two career paths. It asks you to choose what matches your values. Reversed, it shows conflict in a partnership or a decision made only for convenience.

With money

With money, The Lovers speaks of decisions made as a pair: shared money, a purchase planned together, or a choice between two options. Reversed, it asks for care with spending driven by momentary desire, or with disagreements about money in a relationship.

In family and friendship

With family and friends, The Lovers brings harmony and affinity: relationships where you feel seen and chosen. Reversed, it shows disagreements about values or the feeling of having to pick a side.

On the personal path

As personal guidance, The Lovers asks you to choose from what is true for you, not from what others expect of you. Aligning what you feel and what you think is the key. Reversed, it shows an inner split: wanting one thing and doing another.

Advice

The Lovers' advice is to choose with your whole heart, in line with what you believe.
