The Fool, card 0 of the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot (1909)

0 · Folio 1

Major Arcana · 0

The Fool

Upright

new beginnings, spontaneity, leap of faith

An open beginning made of curiosity and nerve. Trust the step, even without seeing the whole path.

Reversed

recklessness, hesitation, ignored risks

Freedom tips into carelessness, or fear stops the leap altogether. Look where you will land before you jump.

Symbolism

The Fool stands at the edge of a cliff, eyes on the sky, a light bundle over one shoulder and a white rose in hand. A small dog leaps beside him, half warning and half celebration. In the 1909 art, the yellow sun behind the figure says it is still early: everything is about to begin.

In general

The Fool is the card of the first step. It appears when life asks for movement before certainty, and reminds you that not every path needs to be mapped to be worth taking. It speaks of lightness, curiosity and trusting what you feel, even without all the answers. Reversed, the same impulse loses its footing: haste, distraction, or fear of taking the leap you already know you need to take.

Yes or no

The Fool already has one foot in the air: yes, if you accept beginning without all the answers. The leap is also a path. Reversed, the answer is maybe: before you jump, look where you will land.

In love

In a love reading, The Fool points to a light, spontaneous beginning: a new crush, an unexpected meeting, or the wish to live the relationship with more freedom.

If you are in a relationship, it invites you to bring novelty and adventure into your routine together. If you are single, The Fool asks for openness: love may come from where you least expect it, if you do not close the doors first.

Reversed, in love, The Fool speaks of recklessness or lack of commitment: someone who wants the freedom without the responsibility, or a leap taken too fast.

As feelings

As feelings, The Fool speaks of enchantment and curiosity: this person feels light around you, drawn to something new, wanting to see where it goes, but without plans or promises. Reversed, it shows unsteady feelings: interest that comes and goes, or fear of really getting involved.

At work

At work, The Fool often points to a beginning: a new job, a change of field, a project of your own or a bold idea. It is a time to learn by doing. Reversed, it warns against impulsive decisions, like dropping everything without minimal preparation.

With money

With money, The Fool asks for lightness, not carelessness: it is a good time to experiment, as long as you do not bet what you cannot lose. Reversed, it shows impulse spending or risks taken without thinking.

In family and friendship

With family and friends, The Fool brings spontaneity: gatherings for no reason, trips, the joy of not taking everything so seriously. Reversed, it may show someone who runs from responsibility or acts without thinking of others.

On the personal path

As personal guidance, The Fool asks you to trust the beginning, even without knowing the end. Its courage is not a lack of judgement: it is accepting that life is learned along the way. Reversed, it shows fear of starting dressed up as caution, or haste dressed up as courage.

Advice

The Fool's advice is to take the first step with a light heart and open eyes.
